Our Condolences to Sandy Hook

The writers at Proverbial Thought would like to send their condolences to the grieving families, friends, and especially parents of those who died or were injured today at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Many times there are no easy answers for the things we have to endure. Many times there are no answers at all. Yet, there are words of comfort from God’s Word. The prophet Jeremiah wrote the following words in the middle of great sorrow…

“This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” – Lamentations 3:21-23 NKJV

Yes, as a pastor I have been asked by many families to lend words of comfort after the passing of a loved one. Often I stand before a crying family and say, “I know you are waiting for me to give you some words of comfort, but I can’t do that…only God can.”

It is then that I read the following words from Paul…

“But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.

For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

Therefore [comfort] one another with these words.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 ESV

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Newtown, Connecticut. God be with you and bring you peace.
