Proverbs 16:21-22
The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning. Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.
Wise Words (v. 21)
Are you a person who thinks about every word that comes out of your mouth or do you just talk and think later about what you said?
I had a professor in college that, when asked a question, he would take several minutes to think about his words and then proceed to answer the question.
This drove me crazy! Even if he knew the answer right off the top of his head – he still thought about every word he said. His reasoning for choosing his words correctly is that he wanted to make sure the words he used explained the question in the best way possible.
My professor was wiser than I thought!
Get Understanding
So what exactly is understanding? Understanding is the ability to comprehend or grasp the true nature of something. It is the correct and proper analysis of a dilemma, event, or situation that sees all the angles and consequences.
God wants us to be people of understanding but true understanding can only come from God. Proverbs 2:6 says:
For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
According to our verse, those who have understanding are like a wellspring or a fountain of life.
Lord, I pray that each and every day we would seek after YOU and your wisdom. I pray that you would show us how to use our speech for good and not to hurt others around us. Keep us in your care and help us to strive to understand you more and more.

Proverbs 15:28
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
Spewing Answers
I am pretty sure you know someone who is a “know-it-all”. These are the people who always have an answer for everything, whether what they know is accurate or even true.
One of the big dangers with the “know-it-all” type is that their answers can lead to big problems.
Take it from one of those know-it-all’s.
I used to respond to someone in any situation, and very rarely with “I don’t know.” Much of the time, I was answering people (whether or not they asked me) about other people and what they were or were not doing.
Many times, I would even answer people’s questions with information I had heard in passing, but I would pass off as hard facts the parts I had to fill in.
Do you know how many fights, strained or even ruined relationships, or feelings hatred/bigotry/fear I initiated due to my spewing mouth? (Neither do I)
Studied answers
Perhaps you know that person who rarely speaks, but when they do they sum up or finish a conversation with their amazing words of insight.
I wish I could say I am one of those, but I still have a long way to go. In any event, this is what this type of person is like:
This person listens more than the speak.
This person pays attention to the details, not just what people say.
This person thinks through what they will say, weighing all of the facts.
In other words, this type of person studies each word and action of others and themselves before speaking.
Christians
As Christians, we must study everything we say, each interaction we have with others.
Not only that, we must study God’s Word so that we are “ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).
Giving an answer that we think is true or that sounds right can be very dangerous. This is where heresy and blasphemies begin and spread. This is where non-Christians find reasons to avoid the Church and Jesus.
Lord Jesus, move in our hearts through Your Holy Spirit to seek and speak truth. Guide us in all truth that we might bring peace and healing rather than evil to this world.

Proverbs 14:16
“A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.”
Warnings
As has been said many times on Proverbial Thought, the book of Proverbs is a book of warnings. Solomon, the wisest man to have ever lived, has penned warning after warning to help guide and direct us in the our lives.
The Thinker
One of Auguste Rodin’s most famous sculptures is The Thinker, a piece originally conceived to be part of another work. The Thinker was part of a commission by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris to sculpt a monumental door based on The Divine Comedy of Dante. Each of the statues in the piece represented one of the main characters in the epic poem.
Wikipedia describes the statue of The Thinker as the following:
“It depicts a man in sober meditation battling with a powerful internal struggle.”
Today’s verse reminds me of this statue. Here is why, and please stay with me. The name God is never mentioned in this verse. I thought of this statue because I believe that this verse is saying that a wise man is one who thinks before he encounters evil and is afraid of the consequences of his actions and therefore departs, or gets away from evil.
On the other hand, a person who does not think at all of the consequences just plows ahead no matter what it may cost him. He exemplifies the old saying: “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” The ESV says our verse this way, “One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless.”
Count the Cost
When faced with evil, do you jump in with both feet before even thinking about what it may cost you? Or are you like the wise man, and ponder what would happen if you gave into the evil.
Solomon is telling us that we would be very wise to “think before we act”!
Next time you are faced with evil, stop and think about that it may cost you! Sin breaks our fellowship with God and when we really stop and think about what the results from that would cost us, I think you would agree with me that we would gladly depart from evil.
Lord, I pray that we would stop and think! In times of temptation and trials, help us to be cautious and turn from evil and back to you. I thank you for your grace and forgiveness for those times when I don’t think and plunder recklessly into evil. Thank you for your loving mercy toward me!

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” -Matthew 3:2
John’s primary message while baptizing people in the Jordan River was to repent.
Repent literally means “to change your mind.”
Stop thinking the way you do! Stop only thinking about what this world says, and think biblical thoughts, heavenly thoughts! Realize Jesus is Lord of all and Savior of the world!
You may think you are a good person, or that your good deeds will outweigh your bad deeds. But God says you do not understand how much help you need, how great a chasm separates us and Him.
The message of John and all of Jesus’ disciples is “Change your ways! Turn to God! Repent and believe!”
We cannot come to Christ unless we are willing to change.
Great God, thank You for leading us to Your Son. Continue to conform our minds to Your will as we bring others along.
